Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park lies just north of downtown Las Vegas, where a group of Mormon missionaries set up camp in 1885. Drawn to this spring-fed creek that flowed through the valley, settlers took advantage of this oasis as it was the only free-flowing water for miles.

Considered to be one of the oldest settlements in the state of Nevada, it’s here where Morman Missionaries set up camp along the Las Vegas Creek. THIS is the place, the The Mormons built a fort on this site in 1855, the first non-native settlement in the Las Vegas Valley, to aid travelers going between Salt Lake City and California and to minister to the natives. Early in March 1848, W. Sidney, S. Willis, and Wilford Hudson, members of the Mormon Battalion, set out from Sutter's Fort to hunt deer. Stopping on the south fork of the American River, they found gold. They told their story on returning to the fort, and soon about 150 Mormons and other miners flocked to the site, which was named Mormon Island.
